Atrium Glaskunst - Stained Glass Residency

Atrium Glaswerk is a stained glass studio in de Pinte, Belgium, that restores historical, as well as designs contemporary stained glass windows. The atelier is founded by artist Mieke Verwaetermeulen and has grown into a family business  over the years.

In February 2024 I went on a residency and  I enjoyed a week of craftmanship, tradition, as well as experimentation. I focused on making a stained glass window design, playing with the opacities and textures of the glass in combination with a well composed design. More practice in glass cutting, specifically curves, learning how to solder and work with lead.

In the second part of the residency I explored slumping. The atelier has a big kiln for Mieke’s artistic projects, which she uses to casts sculptural works. For an upcoming show I’d like to explore making glass cylinders,so I tested a bigger piece of glass in a steel mould.   Experiments are to learn from! The glass cracked andsome parts of it fused to the mould due to not enough primer. On to the next experiment!
